NOTICE: THE STUDENT AND PARENT (if the student is under 18) MUST INITIAL EACH PAGE AND SIGN THIS ACKNOWLEDGEMENT. THIS ACKNOWLEDGEMENT (all pages) MUST BE RETURNED TO THE SCHOOL BEFORE THE FIRST CLASS.

PROGRAM

AAA How to Drive Curriculum:

The AAA How to Drive Novice Driver Training Program is a comprehensive course of study designed to assist people with starting their driving careers. AAA's program takes a comprehensive approach to reduced risk driving and introduces new drivers and their families to The Highway Transportation System, best driving practices, rules of the road, and modern-day vehicle safety technology systems.

The AAA How to Drive curriculum relies heavily upon scientifically reliable data to support concepts, methods, and techniques. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety and other sources contribute significantly to the How to Drive subject matter. The result is a novice driver training program designed specifically to address causal factors in young driver crashes. The course helps effectively identify crash causes, remedies, and solutions so that beginning drivers can reduce risk to the greatest extent possible.

The Maine Driver Education Program utilizes the AAA How To Drive curriculum in conjunction with the Maine Driver Manual. The course consists of:

• 2 Hour Parent Orientation
• 6 hours of Classroom Instruction
• Completion of the AAA How to Drive Online Course
• 10 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction
• In person Final Exam

Ten hours of behind-the-wheel driving does not make a novice driver a safe skilled driver or ensure passage of the driving exam. Each student brings to the course a different level of skill and ability and will progress at their own rate according to aptitude, age, previous experience, and the desire to learn. The most critical factor that will determine progression to a skilled and safe driver is the time at the wheel and the experience. Piano lessons or basketball coaching alone do not make you an accomplished musician or a high school star. You have to practice, and the more you do, the better you'll become. Parents must take an active role and encourage safe driving practices.

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

STUDENT AGE:

Students must be 15 years of age prior to the first class to participate in the program.

COURSE COST AND FEES:

Program Fees: Program fees are displayed on the AAA Driving School Website, and are available in the AAA Driving School Offices. Program fees are subject to change. All program tuition must be paid in full before the first class.

Additional Driving: Students who wish to drive beyond the 10 hours included in the Driver Education Program will be required to schedule and pay for private driving lessons. Rates for private lessons are available on the AAA Driving School Website and, in the AAA, Driving School Offices. Rates are subject to change. Private Drives are available as single drives, as a 5-pack, and as a 10-pack.

Damaged Materials: Any materials made available to the student that are returned damaged or in unusable condition may be subject to reimbursement at the current retail rate.

Missed Lesson: All driving and observation lessons that are canceled with less than 24 hours' notice may be subject to a late cancellation fee of $50.00. A student who fails to cancel and does not show up for a schedule drive or observation, may be subject to a no-show fee of $50.00. Students must clear any outstanding fees before they will be allowed to drive.

PAYMENT/REFUND POLICY:

A $200 deposit is due at registration. The remaining balance is due before the Parent/Student Orientation. If you need to cancel your space in the class, you must provide notice at least two weeks before the orientation, upon which your deposit will be refunded. If you cancel within the two-week period before orientation, your $200 deposit will be forfeited. No refunds will be given after the student has begun the class.

ATTENDANCE:

The Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles has approved AAA's blended online course. The course consists of 8 hours of classroom training, including a Parent/Student Orientation, a minimum of 25 hours on the online course, and 10 hours of behind the wheel training. Student must be in the classroom at the appointed class time. If a student is more than 10 minutes late, they will be required to make-up the class. We require a 24-hour notice if you cannot make a scheduled in-car lesson, and a $50.00 late fee will be charged for missed lessons. Remember, it is your responsibility to inform AAA Driving School if you cannot attend a scheduled class or make an appointed lesson. Students must be dropped off and picked up at the AAA Driving School for all in-car lessons. In some cases, exceptions for in-car lessons may be made. Driving Time will likely exceed the last day of class.

In the event a class or drive is canceled due to weather, or other unforeseen circumstances, students will be notified through the Student Portal, and an e-mail will be sent to the e-mail on file in the student portal. Any such cancellation will require a makeup date to ensure all required hours of the program are provided and attended. Students will be notified of the makeup date by the instructor teaching the class.

ABSENCE FOR GOOD CAUSE:

Students are required to complete 6 hours of classroom instruction. If a student misses a class for good cause, the student will be allowed to make up the classroom hours, but in no event will the total classroom hour requirement be reduced. In the event the student misses both scheduled classes they will be removed from the program, and no refund will be issued.

For the purpose of absence, good cause shall mean an injury or death in the family, or a natural disaster so declared by an official government authority. Other absences will be addressed on a case-by-case basis, and the decision of the instructor of the class session shall be final.

STUDENT BEHAVIOR:

Driver Education is a serious program of instruction that requires mature behavior at all times to ensure the safety of everyone. Any student who is disruptive or disorderly will be removed from the program and no refund will be given.

ATMOSPHERE:

AAA is strongly committed to maintaining a safe and comfortable atmosphere free of discrimination, harassment, intimidation, and insult. Racial, ethnic, sexual, or religious harassment of any kind, or any harassment dealing with employees, or students including age, race, color, religion, national origin, ancestry, marital status, pregnancy, medical condition, physical or mental disability, sexual or gender orientation, gender identity or gender expression, or generic information as required by federal or state law, whether verbal, written or physical must be reported immediately to an instructor, Manager, or the Human Resources Department at AAA Northern New England. Any and all complaints will be promptly and thoroughly evaluated. Retaliation against any person for reporting incidents of harassment or discrimination is prohibited.

SEXUAL HARASSMENT:

Sexual harassment is a form of individual misconduct that undermines the integrity of AAA Northern New England. Sexual harassment is a violation of both state and federal law. Sexual harassment consists of unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal, visual, or physical conduct of a sexual nature.

Forms of sexual harassment include, but are not limited to the following:

1. Verbal harassment, such as derogatory comments, jokes, or slurs
2. Physical harassment, such as unnecessary or offensive touching, or impeding or blocking movement
3. Visual harassment, such as derogatory or offensive posters, cards, cartoons, drawings, or gestures

All complaints will be promptly and thoroughly evaluated, corrective action will be taken when appropriate, including removal from the program without refund, and possible referral to appropriate law enforcement authorities. Retaliation against any person or persons for reporting incidents or sexual harassment or for making complaints is prohibited.

CELL PHONES/ELECTRONIC DEVICES:

Cell phone use is not allowed in the classroom, or in the cars. Cell phones and electronic devices must be turned off before the start of each class, and set to silent/do not disturb/or turned off during in-car lessons.

FIT TO DRIVE:

Any student exhibiting the effects of alcohol or drugs will be removed from the program and no refund will be given. If the student appears to be mentally or physically incapable of driving the vehicle safely, they will be refused permission to drive.

Students must wear appropriate footwear when driving. Students who arrive with inappropriate footwear will not be allowed to drive and may be subject to late cancellation fees.

MAINE MEDICAL COMPLIANCE

The State of Maine, pursuant to 29-250 C.M.R. Ch. 3, requires a medical review for drivers with certain conditions as outlined within the regulation. The CR-24 process is a medical clearance process that takes place between your doctor and the state BMV, and it requires that people with certain conditions obtain a medical doctor's opinion regarding suitability to drive. Students with a diagnosed condition will be given the appropriate forms and may not drive until medical clearance has been authorized by the State.

SMOKING/VAPING POLICY:

Smoking/Vaping is NOT PERMITTED in or around the AAA classroom or the AAA training vehicles. Any student under the age of 18 found smoking/vaping while under the supervision of AAA Driving School will be removed from the program with no refund given.

TEXTBOOKS:

Textbooks will be provided for the students. Loaned textbooks must be returned in the condition received. Books returned in a damaged condition may be subject to a fee for replacement, not to exceed the retail value of the book. Books are available for student purchase if one is desired.

SUCCESSFUL COURSE COMPLETION:

To successfully complete the AAA Driving School program students must pass the final exam with a grade 80% or better and complete all 8 hours of classroom theory, (Including the orientation) a minimum of 25 hours of the online course, 10-hours of behind the wheel training and parents must fulfill the parental involvement component. Student grades will be determined on the basis of class participation, end of chapter checkups and the Final Exam. If a student fails to timely complete the program, such student has a one-time opportunity to resume and complete the original program within 6 months of the last class the student attended.

MOTOR VEHICLE VIOLATIONS:

Students are not permitted by law or class policy to operate a motor vehicle on public roadways other than in the driver education program. Any violation will result in removal from the program and no refund will be given.

RECORDING DEVICES:

AAA training vehicles are equipped with digital recording devices. Such a device could record the conversations and movements of all passengers.

VIOLATION OF POLICIES:

The AAA Driving School reserves the right to remove a student from the program without a refund if these policies are violated or otherwise not adhered to.

STATE OF MAINE MEDICAL REVIEW BOARD

The State of Maine, pursuant to 29-250 C.M.R. Ch. 3, requires a medical review for drivers with certain conditions as outlined within the regulation.

The CR-24 process is a medical clearance process that takes place between your doctor and the state BMV, and it requires that people with certain conditions obtain a medical doctor's opinion regarding suitability to drive. These conditions include, but are not limited to:

• Seizures or epilepsy
• Loss of consciousness, blackouts, or fainting spells
• Diabetes requiring insulin
• Cardiovascular Conditions, Heart conditions, or Chronic respiratory disease that could cause sudden incapacitation
• Musculoskeletal disorders
• Vision or hearing impairment not corrected with glasses, contacts, or hearing aids
• Neurological disorders (e.g., stroke, traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis)
• Mental health conditions that could affect safe driving (e.g., depression, anxiety, Major Depressive Disorder, Bipolar, Schizophrenia, Dissociative Disorders, Dementia)
• Neurodevelopmental conditions (e.g., autism spectrum disorder, ADD, ADHD, Developmental Coordination Disorder)
• Other medical or psychiatric conditions that may affect alertness, coordination, judgment, or reaction time (Sleep apnea, Narcolepsy, idiopathic hypersomnia, Hypoglycemia, Unexplained alteration/loss of consciousness)
• Medications that may impair attention, coordination, or consciousness

IF YOU HAVE A CONDITION AND ARE UNSURE IF A MEDICAL REVIEW IS REQUIRED, PLEASE ASK AN INSTRUCTOR.

Failure to disclose a known condition may result in:

• Immediate removal from the program with no refund
• A delay in your program participation/completion if it is discovered that a medical review is required
• If a permit is issued and the BMV discovers that there is a known condition, they can seize your permit until the medical review is resolved, and/or initiate legal action for the failure to disclose the information

Modifications to Services and Prices

• AAA Maine - Driving School reserves the right at any time and from time to time to modify or discontinue, temporarily or permanently, the Service (or any part thereof) with or without notice.
• Prices of all Services are subject to change with or without notice.
• AAA Maine - Driving School shall not be liable to you or to any third party for any modification, price change, suspension or discontinuance of the Service.
